The air the next morning felt fresher and cooler when they went down to breakfast. It was a slightly grey start, but Kitty suspected the cloud would move away once the sun came back out.

Sebastian was already at breakfast when they entered the dining room. They had brought Bertie downstairs with them as he was eager to be outside and the scent of sausages and bacon was in the air.

‘Morning, the rain seems to have stopped.’ Sebastian gestured towards the window with his fork.

‘I expect it will turn bright again later,’ Kitty agreed as she went to the sideboard and helped herself to scrambled eggs from one of the trays on top of the spirit burners.

She joined Sebastian at the table while Bertie sat patiently at her feet waiting for Matt to return with a loaded plate. The dog wasn’t disappointed as Matt cut up some sausage and placed it down for Bertie.

‘What are your plans for the day?’ Kitty asked, looking at Sebastian.

‘I’ve a meeting with Ruby’s father and old Watts, the estate manager, then I promised Ruby I would show her around the place a bit more.’ Sebastian toyed with a mushroom on the edge of his plate. ‘I suppose you will be assisting Inspector Lewis with this business of Agnes’s death? I mean, Millicent Craven said you knew him well and you are private investigators.’

‘I don’t think the inspector would especially welcome our help, but we have promised to stay for a couple of days, as you know, to make Ruby feel more secure. The murder is bad enough but the attempt on the safe has left her feeling worried I think,’ Kitty said as she applied butter to a rather cold slice of toast.

‘That’s true. The business with the safe does seem a bit peculiar. Ruby’s jewellery is very valuable though so it may have tempted someone,’ Sebastian said and frowned as he finished his breakfast.

‘The safe would be more secure if your father’s study were kept locked but he said he has no idea where the key to the door might be.’ Matt slipped a bit of bacon under the table to Bertie.

Sebastian laughed. ‘That key has been gone for years. It’s like the ones for his desk drawers. The only key he has is the one to the safe and of course that has a combination as well. Security has never been at the top of Father’s list.’ His face sobered. ‘Although, now this has happened to Agnes he may need to rethink things, I suppose.’

He drained the remainder of his tea from his cup and stood up from the table. ‘I had better get a move on. I want to look at some things before Mr Conway arrives for the meeting. He always asks hundreds of questions.’

‘He seems to be taking his new responsibilities very seriously,’ Kitty said after Sebastian had hurried away.

‘Yes, he does. I daresay Lady Sarah will be pleased,’ Matt agreed.

Rupert arrived a few minutes after his brother had left. He was accompanied by Mrs Craven.
